Understanding Employee Wellness: The 4 Types of Well-Being and How to Best Support Each Kind

I’m sure most of us have encountered the different types of love languages at some point - showing your appreciation for someone is complicated and it requires different methods based on that person's needs. But did you know that there are also different types of employee wellness? Much like with the love languages, prioritizing your employees' wellness involves meeting various types of needs. Want to learn how you can best support your employees’ well-being?  We have compiled a complete list of all the types of wellness and how to support your employees in each kind.

1) Physical Well-Being

This type of wellness involves understanding and managing one’s physical health. This includes taking care of your body through regular exercise, proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, and preventive health measures. Good physical health supports energy levels and optimizes functionality at home and at work.

Ways to support employee physical well-being:

  • Offer sick days.

  • Encourage employees to prioritize their health.

  • Provide medical benefits such as dental and medication.

  • Conduct health and safety sessions that teach employees how to navigate their workplace safely.

2) Emotional Well-Being

This form of well-being encompasses managing your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in a way that allows you to cope with life’s challenges. This involves being self-aware, maintaining good mental health and effectively coping with stress.

Ways to support employee emotional well-being:

  • Offer personal leave days.

  • Encourage employees to prioritize their mental health and maintain a good work-life balance.

  • Have regular check-ins and give employees a chance to voice their thoughts.

  • Provide mental health resources such as counselling services, employee assistance programs (EAPs), and wellness apps.

3) Financial Well-Being

This kind of wellness centers on managing your finances effectively to reduce stress and increase security. It includes budgeting, saving, and making informed financial decisions to ensure stability now and in the future.

Ways to support employee financial well-being:

  • Offer financial resources such as information on budgeting, saving, investing, and retirement planning.

  • Provide access to free or subsidized financial tools such as financial counselling or meetings with a financial advisor.

  • Encourage open communication by creating an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing financial challenges or seeking help without stigma.

4) Social Well-Being

This final type of well-being relates to maintaining healthy, supportive relationships with family, friends, colleagues and the community. Positive social interactions contribute to happiness, reduce stress, and provide a support network during tough times.

Ways to support employee social well-being:

  • Organize team building activities that allow employees to feel comfortable sharing ideas, concerns, and personal interests with their coworkers. To learn some great team building activity ideas, read our previous blog post!

  • Host social events outside of the office to foster employee relationships. Volunteer opportunities are great for this because they promote bonding and give employees a chance to connect with their community.

  • Create employee-led social groups for team members to join such as a book club or sports team.

As you can see, prioritizing your employees’ well-being involves many different factors. By supporting the four types of wellness at your company, you can create a happy and productive environment for your team.
