It’s Time For A Change: The 4 Stages of Adapting Your Leadership Style

As I’m sure many of us have heard, the first step to a solution is admitting that there is a problem. But once you’ve acknowledged that there is a problem, now what? Many leaders ask this very question once they discover that their leadership isn’t working. What if we told you there was a 4-step process that can help guide you through adapting your leadership? Keep reading as we go over the 4 stages of adapting your leadership to best suit your company’s needs.

Stage 1: Assessment

Begin by assessing the needs of your team and the requirements of your situation. Ask yourself, what are you trying to accomplish and what is your team going to need to accomplish that goal? A great way to determine the needs and requirements of your team is to conduct a needs assessment.

When conducting your assessment, you need to consider the following factors:

  • The skills and experience of your team members

  • The nature of the task or project at hand

  • The organization culture

  • External factors impacting the situation

Stage 2: Flexibility

Once you have a clear understanding after your assessment, be prepared to be flexible with your leadership style. It’s important to acknowledge that different situations call for different approaches. It will also take time to figure out what leadership approach works best for you and your team. Be patient and trust the process.

To remain flexible with your leadership, consider the following tips:

  • Find a balance between being more directive and authoritative in some circumstances and more collaborative and communicative in others.

  • Remain open-minded and adaptable.

Stage 3: Implementation

Now that you have organized the what and the how, you can put your adapted leadership style into action. Ensure that you effectively communicate the approach, situation and rationale behind your new leadership style. Practice how you will present this change to your team beforehand. Remember that the implementation process may feel odd. This will not be your usual means of operation so it can feel strange for a little while.

When implementing your new leadership style, it is important to keep the following things in mind:

  • Provide clear and direct support when needed.

  • Encourage your teammates to contribute their ideas and skills.

  • Be responsive to feedback and remain open to making further adjustments.

Stage 4: Evaluation

After your new leadership style has been implemented, it is important that you regularly evaluate its effectiveness. Monitor your leadership style’s impact on your team and their outcomes. Then, reflect on what worked well and what can be improved.

To evaluate your new leadership style, follow the following two steps:

Step 1: Solicit feedback from your team members to gain insights into their perspectives and experiences.

Step 2: Use this information to refine your approach and continue learning and growing as a leader.

By working through these 4 stages with your team, you can effectively adapt your leadership style to better meet the needs of your colleagues and the demands of different situations.
