5 Key Tips to Keep in Mind When Training New Employees

Happy Autumn everyone! 🍂 With that colder weather rolling in, it won’t be long before the leaves start to change colour and fall. With the countless leaves out there, imagine being told to rake leaves without being given a rake? You’d likely feel frustrated and would be unable to complete the task. This is similar to how new employees feel when they aren’t trained properly or given the right tools to succeed. To ensure that your employees aren’t lost in the wind, you want to make sure to create a strong training process that fosters the success of your new hires. Not sure where to start? Don't worry, we’ve created a list of 5 tips to keep in mind when training new employees to help them thrive in their new roles.

Tip #1: Keep updated SOPs

It is important that your standard operating procedure documents (SOP) are updated and accurate. This will help to give you guidelines and ensure that your training process is consistent. By documenting the training process, you also give employees a reference they can use if they forget any details.

Tip #2: Create clear and concise outlines of tasks

Be sure to be extremely detailed when outlining tasks to new employees. This helps employees understand their role and what is expected of them. It is also important to confirm with employees that they understand how to complete their tasks and give them chances to ask questions or bring up concerns.

Tip #3: Give employees context behind their work

Ensure that new employees don’t just understand the what but also the why. This involves explaining the company’s mission to new hires and how their role contributes to the company’s goals. If employees understand how they are making an impact on the company, they are more likely to be motivated and committed to their work.

Tip #4: Communicate often

Frequent communication is the key when training new employees. It is important that you prioritize clear communication and are patient with new employees as they adjust. Be supportive throughout the training process and provide constructive feedback to help new hires learn and improve. The more open the communication, the smoother the training process.

Tip #5: Remember to be human

Remember that you are not a training robot. Avoid giving automated responses to new employees during the training process. Although you do have a list of things that you need to cover, it is important to also try to get to know your new team members. What do they like to do? What are their career goals? Try to take a step back from being a trainer and remember to be a colleague and a friend.

By keeping these five tips in mind, you can train new employees efficiently and effectively to help them seamlessly integrate into your team.
